By George Orwell. A new adaptation by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan
Tuesday 15th – Saturday 19th July 2025 at 7.45pm and matinee performance on Saturday 19th July 2025 at 2.30pm
At The Old Court Theatre.
Winston Smith, living under the totalitarian rule of The Party, has the idea of writing a diary. It is a
crime punishable by death and “Big Brother is always watching”.
Think you know George Orwell’s 1984? Doublethink again. In this disturbing adaptation from Icke
and Macmillan, Winston lives, imagines and remembers events as he dares to dream of a world free
of Big Brother. What is history and what is false memory? What is real and what is fantasy? Who
and what can be trusted?
While Winston, Julia and O’Brien and the other well-known characters remain central to the story,
Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s adaptation considers The Appendix of the novel, starting and
ending with a group of people from the present day dissecting the text.
